Are you a Landlord? Are you registered?
Today in our series we are looking at Landlord Registration.
Prior to letting out your property, you must be a registered Landlord. You need to apply to the Local Authority where your rental property is situated and pay the appropriate fee for registration.
The Local Authority request your name and address, the address of your rental property/properties, and details of your letting agent if you have one. Checks will be carried out to confirm you are a “fit and proper person”.
The registration process will take into account:
- convictions for fraud, firearms, sexual, violent or drug offences
- anti-social behaviour orders against you or any of your tenant
- unlawful discrimination, breaches of letting codes, housing law or landlord and tenant law
Your registration will be valid for 3 years from the date the council approves your application.
If you rent out a property without being a registered landlord heavy fines and penalties can be imposed. Landlords can face fines up to £50,000.
